Orthopaedic Institute

Brian T O'Connor initiated a charity at Oswestry called the Orthopaedic Institute that is committed to developing research and teaching of Orthopaedics and other musculo-skeletal conditions. All consultants and PhD researchers at Oswestry are invited to be members. Richard Burbidge is the current chairman.

My research has been greatly helped through this group who bring useful resource and personal skills and an external point of view to the Orthopaedic hospital at Oswestry.

The Outcome centre funds are supervised, and many clinical trials are on-going through this centre. In particular a study of 5,000 hip resurfacings of the Birminham design is now in its tenth year and provides useful information on this new solution to hip arthritis.

The Institute Publishing group is a collaboration between Victor Pullicin, Alun Jones, Judith Harris and myself. We have 5 books published, all available throught the site.

The Basic Science Course has run for 15 years every January. This is a 1 week course oriented towards the FRCS(Orth) examination and trainees come from as far as Hong Kong. Other clinical examination, foot and ankle, anatomy, hand and paediatric courses are run also.

Equipment for the lecture theatre is provided by the Institute, and Gwilym Owen is a fundraiser with successin funding the Torch and many other appeals.

The www.orthopaedic-institute.org is a site that enables courses to be booked and books to be sold.
